normal.dot template problems

Hi,

We use a customized version of the normal template (Word
2000) at our office. There are a lot of macros added to
this template for repetitive procedures that we use.

The problem is we keep getting a message saying the file
is corrupt. So we build a new one and then a few days
later the same thing happens. It's as if Word can't
handle macros.

The message we get is:

Word encountered file corruption while opening C:\....
normal.dot. Part of this document may be recoverable.
Attempt recovery now? Yes No

If we attempt recovery it deletes all the macros. If we
don't attempt recovery it freezes or gets stuck in a
cycle that won't let you close the template.

How can we use a customized template without running into
this problem?

Thanks.

This isn't the way to use normal.dot. Let everyone have a new normal.dot and
keep it for saving their own customisations.

Save all your 'global' macros and AutoText, etc. in a new template. Put this
template on a folder of its own (read only attribute) on the server and
point everyone's Start-up (Tools, Options, File Locations) to this template.

This is also the best approach because you can keep a copy of this template
and make any edits, updates or additions to the template and then when it is
ready simply switch it for the one on the server. Then everyone has the
updates.

Normal.dot shouldn't be a shared file. It should be individual. That is
probably the cause of your corruption. Using an additional shared global
template should cure your problems.
