normal.dot template

How do you alter the default template? I made the
desired changes, and save it as a *.dot template. You
cannot save it as normal.dot, because that is already
open :-(

I then exit Word and rename the new template file as
normal.dot. This is located in the startup directory for
word (as specificed in tools\options\file locations)

I'm using Word XP.

As you have gathered, that doesn't work. *Open* normal.dot and edit it
directly.

Startup add-in templates are something different, in that they provide such
things as macros, toolbars, autotext available to all your documents (styles
are provided by *document* templates). Normal.dot is a special kind of
global template and is located in the folder indicated at tools > options >
file locations > user templates. In Word 2002, this is a hidden system file.

Normal.dot should not be subject to major editing as such changes can have
unwanted side effects eg on labels. Make major changes in document templates
for particular tasks.

That raises an obvious question - how to "open" and then
save normal.dot. Where is it located? Unfortunately, I
now have a couple, since I created some in trying to
modify the default, global template.
