normal.dot

Don Hollick

Hello,

I am running Office 2003 on W2K3 Terminal Server.

When starting Word in a TS session the message "Word has detected a problem
with the existing Normal.dot. Would you like to create a new Normal.dot?"
appears.
Answering Yes or No still opens Word ok.

This happens every second time Word is opened and in every user session.
Since each user has their own normal.dot file this is very odd. Why does this
happen and how can I fix it?

Thank you

I would try renaming normal.dot to .bad or just delete it for every user.
Word will create a new normal.dot when you open word. Hope this helps.

I know nothing about TS, but it seems the "Cause", "Resolution", and
"More Information" sections in
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/286839/en-us "You receive a 'Microsoft
Word has encountered a problem and needs to close' error message when
you try to start Word 2002 or Word 2003" could apply to your situation,
even though Word doesn't actually crash in your case. My wild guess is
that the error message appears every other time because each TS session
somehow replaces Word's repaired normal.dot template with a screwed up
normal.dot from the user's profile? Hopefully you know more about TS
than I do and this idea will point you in the right direction.
