Normal.dotm in Word 2007 - cannot save changes

Following the instructions in Word Help to modify my normal.dotm template, I
open the existing template, but am prompted to choose how. None of these
options will allow me to save my changes directly over the exisiting file;
I'm told the template file is in use.

To save my changes, i had to choose to save the file with a different name,
then navigate to my templates folder, delete the old one and then change the
filename of the new one.

This seems an arcane way to change this template. What am I missing...?

Thanks.

Hi Clint,

This can happen from a couple of causes, including a 3rd party add-in that uses Normal.dotm, or left over Word temp files from a
forced or unplanned Word shutdown of some type.

With Word closed use Start=>Search to locate and send to the recycle bin files found on your PC/server with this search string
~$*.*;*.tmp

Then restart Word to see if you get the same issue.

Some changes to the defaults in Normal.dotm can be made without using 'Open' on the file itself. What changes are you looking to
make?

I'm having the same problem. I've changed the default font 3 times, but it
won't keep it.
