Normal.dotm

I have recently loaded Windows 7 x64 with Office 2007. I am now finding
that when I close Word I get a message "Changes have been made that affect
the global template, normal.dotm. Do you want to save the changes?" Of the
options available only 'No' is responsive and allows the 'app' to close.

I have Googled for a solution (it appears to be a common problem) and have
tried all the solutions on offer, and there are many. However I have had no
success in solving the problem. There are no add-ins, no macros, no Norton
products on the machine. The 'problem' is one of annoyance as Word appears
to function normally despite the pop up when closing. However I would
appreciate it if anyone has any unique suggestion to share that will solve
the problem.

One thing I simply do not understand is I cannot locate the template
'Normal.dotm' or any other flavours of 'normal.dot'. I have tried all the
normal search engines but the file doesn't seem to exist. Further it
doesn't appear to exist in my WinXP installation which doesn't exhibit the
same problem.

I can't imagine this problem relates to Win7 x64. Your help and suggestions
will be appreciated.

Find normal.dot in Windows Explorer and rename it to normal.old. Then open Word and
a new one will be rebuilt and your issue will not occur again

You have to search to include hidden, default location being;
c:\Documents & setiings\username\Application Data\microsoft\templates (in
WinXP)

Thanks Peter for your response. Although I have unchecked 'hidden files
and folders' in Win Explorer and 'taken ownership' of various 'blocked'
folders I cannot locate Normal.dotm. All the folders entitled templates,
where one might expect Normal.dotm to reside show empty. Fortunately I have
a 'system backup' made shortly before the problem showed itself so I intend
to use a hammer to crack this particular nut!

Thanks again

There's also a folder option labeled something like "Hide extensions
for recognized file types". This is checked by default. If your Win
Explorer view of files doesn't show extensions, it's still checked on
your PC.

In at least some Windows versions, if this option is enabled, searches
for files by extension (ie, show me *.DOCM) will turn up nothing.
