Normal file and template

All of a sudden, I get the following messages on exit having done nothing:
"The Normal file already exists. Do you want to replace the existing file"
and "Changes have been made that affect the global template, Normal. Do you
want to save those changes."
1. Are these legitimate Microsoft messages?
2. How do I stop them?

I have already deleted the temp files and located and deleted the files with
the pattern ~$*.do* and rebooted. That did not do the trick.

The cause is usually a misbehaving add-in. See

Jay- Thank you for your reply. I went to the referenced document and did all
that, but to no avail. Any other ideas? I do not use Norton.

I also find I have three suspicious tools in commands: "Hangul Hanja
conversion," "Hanja dictionary" and "Hanja Radical Input." I suspect these
are not standard issue Microsoft?

Here's a similar article about finding add-ins:

It probably won't tell you anything the first article didn't have, but it's
important to be thorough and try all the steps.

If you've truly eliminated the possibility of add-ins, try running Word in safe
mode by holding down the Ctrl key while starting. That troubleshooting method
prevents all add-ins, all registry entries, and the Normal.dot template from
being loaded. Does that eliminate the message? If so, try renaming the
Normal.dot template to Normal.old and restarting Word without safe mode. That
will cause Word to create a new Normal.dot with the factory-fresh settings.

They are "standard issue Microsoft" but only if you've told it to install
Chinese language tools.

Misspoken -- Hangul is a Korean alphabet, not Chinese. In any event, I assume
you don't want it. Click Start > Programs > Microsoft Office > Microsoft Office
Tools > Microsoft Office Language Settings and uninstall it.

Renaming normal and reopening seems to have done it. Thanks-- of couorse, I
did that last.
