Normal/Preview Issue

Leafit

Hello,

I have been chosen to maintain the company web site even though I
have no knowledge of Frontpage 2002 (let alone any web tool). We do
have an outside company redesigning our site with Dreamweaver.
I am experiencing a problem with one of the site pages. It seems when
I view the page in Normal view it looks fine, but when viewed in the
Preview tab it changes to a different look. I had the htm page e-mailed
to me and all is fine with it until placed into the My Webs folder. I
did notice and error in the properties of the page:

(1) Someone directly edited the HTML output of a FrontPage Include
component; the changes have been overwritten. (x4 listed).

Any help would be appreciated to help solve this matter since it is
driving me insane!

Thanks in advance!

Your life will be much easier in the long run if you use the same tool to
maintain your web that it was built with...that being said; DW has a
slightly steeper learning curve (and price tag).

The web was originally designed with Frontpage, but certain pages are
now being recreated with another program.

Thanks for the heads up with DW, but your reply did not help resolve my
issue.

The problem is occurring in Frontpage 2002 or at least I believe it to
be. When I paste the correct htm page into my Web folder the thumbnail
looks fine, but once I hit the "Preview" tab in Frontpage (having the
folder and program open at the same time) the view changes between the
"normal" view and "preview" veiw as well as the thumbnail changing.

Are there compatibility issues between DW and Frontpage?

Yes, there may be compatibility issues with some things, but to be honest
I've really not used DW since DW3 and am only now just starting to use it
again.

With FP you need to be working within a web whether it's on your machine or
on the remote server. You should aways open the web first then create or
edit pages. So take your DW page and IMPORT it into an FP web on your
machine...for starters.

Then try Preview In Browser from in FP...not just Preview. Preview is just
an approx of what the page will look like..PIB is what it will look like in
your browser or any browser you've registered within FP to use to preview.

What looks different?

The page is designed to have three columns of company information. Eac
column has headers, hyperlinks, etc (obviously not the same informatio
in each column).
When viewed in preview or PIB, the columns turn to rows. Mos
information on the page is towards the top/center of the page, whil
the middle portion of the desired page is pushed to the bottom.
Both veiws were actually designed by the outside group using DW, but i
was decided to go with columns over rows. I do know the outside grou
uploaded the information to our server. I decided to have the htm pag
e-mailed to me since the Publish Web tool (from File, not toolbar
would notice a conflict btwn the local and server page every time
updated the correct page on the local drive.
Another note, I have updated the index and one other page on th
server. This seems to change the web page in question from the desire
look to the "row" look.

I am trying to get a disc copy of the entire site from the outsid
group to see if there are conflicts btwn the local information on m
comp and the information this party uploads.

I appreciate the help and will try to get more information to you

are you saying that table columns are being converted to rows? whew, never
seen that happen.

What's the URL for the offending page?

Were the columns designed as a table, or as floating or positioned
<divs>?
If made from <divs> viewing the page without the associated style
sheet could have the effect you are seeing. If the page is not on a
server, post a relevant snippet here (remove any private information
first).

Here is the link to the web page in question. Keep in mind, I asked fo
the page to be updated to the correct version. It is still th
undesired look at the moment:

http://www.schaffnerusa.com/components.htm

It does appear that the page was set up with <divs> or at least that i
what I believe from looking at the html code.

Is it possible for you to just view the Source from the web page?

Here is some of the coding from FrontPage. This is around one of th
areas where the problem exists:

The page loaded from your link does not fit your description. On this
page, you may wish to remove the table containing the page footer.
Other pages do not have the table.

The only page I could find with a 3 column table close to your
description was http://www.schaffnerusa.com/reps/reps_components.htm

This table appears as 3 columns in all views - Design, Preview,
Preview in Browser, and is a table.

This page does have illegal and just plain wrong HTML. An anchor has
been wrapped around a <div>.
In FrontPage change:
<a id="top" name="top">

<!--webbot bot="Include" U-Include="../header.htm" TAG="BODY" --></a>

to

<a id="top" name="top"></a>
<!--webbot bot="Include" U-Include="../header.htm" TAG="BODY" -->

which is legal, and although some will say otherwise, the empty anchor
will work in most browsers.
The include webbot contains the <div>, which makes the original code
illegal.

Every page I have looked at seems to using a table based layout, and
all display correctly in FP.

Are you talking about the red hr that are repeating horizontally making the
appearance of columns? If that's what you mean it has to do with your image:
acaragraphics/rule.jpg (500px wide) being used as cell background.

I think.
