normal template and its discontents

Sorry -- I know this has been asked before (b/c I read it this week),
but I can't find the post for the life of me:
Where is the normal template located in Word '08?

And I read in that thread that one should add to the Normal template
via the "make default" command in whatever document you're working in,
rather than modifying Normal itself. But what if you're not given that
option? (I get the "default" prompt with Format>Font but not
Format>Paragraph, for example ...

(The present issue: I want to make page numbers part of the Normal
template, but you're not given a "make default" option via the drop-
down menu, as far as I can see.)

Hi Chris;

You'll find Normal.dotm here:

User/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Office/User Templates/Normal.dotm

As you've found, there really isn't a Default button for every conceivable
change you might want to make to the Normal.dotm template. Such buttons are
just a convenience, however. You most certainly can open & modify the
template in any way you prefer... I believe the post you recall recommended
either not modifying the Normal *paragraph style* in the Normal.dotm
template or [more likely] not saving all your Custom Styles in the
Normal.dotm template. In fact, I believe you may be referring to the reply I
gave another user in the thread "Permanently Saving Style Changes".

If you're at all serious about your use of the program you might like to
peruse the article written by Clive Huggan entitled "Bend Word To Your
Will". It hasn't been updated specifically for Word 2008 but most everything
there is valid (& similarly located) in any version of Word - Mac or PC.

Hi Chris:

The templates, including Normal template CAN be "anywhere". Many people do
not understand that the setting Word>Preferences>File Locations enables you
to move a variety of "special" file types to anywhere you like on your
computer (or on the network or Internet).

And that going into that setting and clicking "Modify" is the fastest way of
finding out where your Normal.dotm REALLY is.

There will usually be a copy of Normal.dotm in the usual location ‹ but is
that the one Word is actually using? Word>Preferences>File Locations will
tell you, for each user, which one is actually in use.

Hope this helps
