Normal Template Displays a Grid in Background

When I open Word the blank document displays a grid in the background.

This grid is only visible in 'Print Layout' view and disappears if I switch
to another view. Furthermore, on printed documents the grid vanishes.

I've deleted the original normal.dot believing that this may have become
corrupted but the problem persists.

Not sure if this is your problem... but, on the Drawing toolbar, choose
Draw - Grid..., and remove the check next to Display gridlines on screen.
