Normal template

In Word (Office 2008) when I open Normal.dotm, an ordinary document (e.g., document 1) opens. In mu PC when I open Normal.dot, that's what opens. Am I supposed to make my changes in the document, and then save it as Normal.dotm? Or what? Why doesn't it open in the first place.

Second question (which is what I'm trying to correct by opening the normal template).

When I open some documents, but not all by any means, the Mail Merge Manager drop-down menu also opens with it. I can close it easily enough, but it's a very annoying anomaly. Does any one know what formatting might be in the document that causes this to happen? I can't find anything unusual.

Thanks for your help.

In Mac Word you need to navigate to Normal.dotm from within the program
using File> Open. If you navigate to & dbl-click the template in Finder it
simply generates a new blank document [launching Word if it isn't already
running]. However, I don't believe Normal.dotm is the cause of issue #2...
If it were the MMM _would_ launch with every new file you create.

The issue is most likely that the documents involved are in some way
associated with mail merge - they contain MERGEFIELDS of some sort
associated with data sources. MMM will display each time such documents are
opened... Does any type of message appear when you open those files?
