Norton Antivirus is a scam

My parents got a new computer, and I
apparently damaged the Norton (symantec)
antivirus program. While trying to reinstall
I spoke with their Indian call center three times,
and I was unable to enter the key code they
had in a new downloaded program. So I had
to get the new updated version for year 2007.

My advice: Do NOT buy Norton, there
is NO competent customer support.

Management doesn't return emails.


Try AVG antivirus http://www.grisoft.com/

They even have a free version.

To the OP --
Take it as a lesson learned. Unfortunately.
Download the free AVG anti-virus program from grisoft.com. Update it,
and set it to update daily.
Download Zone Alarm, and get version 6, not the new version 7. Version
6 is easier to work with. Version 7 integrates antispyware with the
antivirus and is a PITA. Get a separate antispyware product. Download the
free Zone Alarm.
Download Spybot Search & Destroy -- also free.
Download ad-aware from lavasoft.com. Also free.

Keep the antivirus and the firewall running at all times. Run a full virus
check on a regular basis -- depending on how much your parents use the
computer. Daily or weekly.

Run Spybot Search & Destroy and AdAware on a regular basis too. BE SURE
to go online and update them before running. Weekly or monthly, unless your
parents are going to dangerous websites or downloading unsafe materials.

I know people who just love Norton and have never had any problems. But
it's given me a headache, and as you can see, some of the others who post
here have, ahem -- strong feelings about it as well. Although I see no need
for anyone to have spoken to you in a demeaning tone.

Don't forget to go to Symantic and download the Norton Removal Tool. At least
they give us a way to get most of it off the machine. Then get Firefox, and
your AV won't have much work to do.
