It seems the rash problems relating to Norton AV since 7/1/2004 have not
entirely been the fault of Symantec, however the fix posted by MVPs, of
unchecking the Office Plug-in in the misc options of Norton AV, does work to
address the slow loading of Office products, and does not impinge on
security.
Norton has posted some further application updates, so updating AV today
would be a good start. It would also be a good plan to check Verisign's web
site for an explanation and a fix for their part of the issue

Norton's interim solution

is a last resort. Turning off security checking in IE is not a good plan for
anyone who does not understand the implications.
