Not able to open embedded objects

Gene

Has anyone had a problem trying to open an embedded pdf
file object within a Word document? The Word doc was
created on a PC, embedded a pdf file within it. It opens
fine on a PC, but the Mac cannot open the embedded file.
Is there a way to add this capability on the Mac version?
I know on a PC there is a whole list of embedded objects
that can be opened. On the Mac it is limited. Maybe
there is a way to add another file type to the defaults.
If so, I would appreciate learning how to do this. Thanks.

Hi Gene,

Microsoft's Mac business unit is mulling over the idea of upgrading
support of OLE (Object Linking and Embedding) in Mac Office.

Well I request it as well.

<additional opinion>

I think there should be exact parity between the two platforms, whatever
that PC version can do Mac version should be able to do and the opposite
should be true.

Hi,

Lucky for you that your wish has already been granted!

You can install Virtual PC on your Mac and run any Windows version of
Office that you like.

As far as the Mac version of Office is concerned - some things will
always be Mac only, and some things will always be Windows only. And
most things will be cross-platform. Maybe the solution to the embedding
problem is to make the Windows version of office work the same way that
the Mac version does.

Philip:

It never worked right. OLE is a Windows technology that has no direct Mac
equivalent. Mac had Publish and Subscribe designed to do the same job.

Microsoft is moving away from OLE on Windows due to security considerations,
so it may go away on both platforms.

We will still be able to embed Excel in Word of PowerPoint in Excel or
whatever, but the underlying mechanism will be a lot different.

Cheers

Thanks...I appreciate the info. This is more response than I got from
Microsoft awhile back. Sorry it took so long to respond back. Thanks
again!
