By exact dates, do you mean they have dates typed in for them? If so, if
there is even 1 minutes gap then that Task is not critical. the only way to
get an accurate critical path is first to remove every constraining date
(select all tasks then Shift+F2 for the Task Information dialog, Advanced
tab and set the constraint as soon as possible).
Now enter some new milestones under a summary task called Constraints. Set
these dates to represent hard constraints for your project. EG Resource not
available until or Management meeting this date for CAPEX decision. Enter a
note explaining why that date for each constraint.
Now link these milestones to any Tasks they drive. No other tasks should
have dates entered for them.
Now make sure all tasks are linked. Check all tasks that have no successor
or predecessor. Ideally all but the first and last tasks (plus the
constraint tasks) have predecessors and successors. Add lag or lead times if
needed (see help).
Assign Resources and reduce units to levels that match what you are given,
or for high priority projects, what you need). Your durations should now be
realistic.
Get someone else who knows your project and get them to peer review your
schedule for logical problems.
Now you may well have an accurate and reasonable critical path.
