Wondering if anyone has heard of a similar issue and can
offer any enlightenment:
I have a Dell Powervault NAS appliance running Windows
2000 Powered Server, with 2 logical volumes E: and F: on
the same RAID 5 array group. Vol f: has shares as well as
vol e: When I try to work in any MS Office documents
(Word, Excel, PwrPoint) and make changes on the vol E:, I
get intermittant errors about not enough disk or memory.
The messages vary per program, but are all similar.
Working with Office docs on the F: vol does not produce
said issues. The issue is global to all of our OS versions
(NT4 Workstation, Win98, Win2kPro), and to all of our
versions of Office (Office97, Office2k, OfficeXP). I have
checked disk space, quotas, and permissions, and none of
those seem to be issues. Working within Explorer to copy
large amounts of data to this volume presents no problem,
and creating/editing .rtf files from Word are successful
as well.
Below is an excerpt from one of my developer's e-mails
describing the problem:
* From what I've been able to tell it only happens
with Office documents
(Word Excel, PowerPoint) on any of the shares on the F:
drive of KT-NAS1.
* Error Messages:
* Word: "The save failed due to out of memory or
disk space".
* PowerPoint: "{filename} is read-only. Do you want
to save changes under
a different name?"
* Excel: "The disk is full", followed by "Document
not saved".
* I've duplicated the errors in Office 97/2000/XP
and in Windows
98/NT/2000.
* The errors are sporadic, but not far apart. For
example, I can open a
document and continue to modify/save 5 or 6 times for a
couple of minutes and
then it will suddenly get the error. Once the error
happens, I can no longer
save the document. Not even a Save as to the same folder.
I'm torn between the commonalities and dissimilarities of
the issues. I'm not sure if my NAS is the issue, but then
why is it only Office documents?
Any help anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated.
