not enough memory error when opening files

D

driemaed

I am running a Mac G4 OS X 10.3.9 and microsoft office v.x (10.1.4)

Everything in office works but Word. I go to open files and i give the
message of: There is not enough memory or disk space to complete the
operation.

I have tried restarting, shutting down and restarting, re-installing
Office v.x, starting word in a different order, starting word fro the
HD. Nothing works.

Funny thing is after 1 of about 10 restarts, a couple files actually
opened, but then went back to the stated message.

I have no other apps in use when this happens.

I am getting frustrated. Please help if you know of any solutions.

Thank you for your time

There are some unanswered questions, such as :

1- How much RAM do you have?
2- How much free disk space?
3- Are the files stored on your HD or some other (removable?) device?

But the problem may be that you're still running Office 10.1.4 (according to
your post). That means you've missed a few updates which may be the cause of
the problem, so the first thing I'd suggest is that you download the 10.1.9
update, apply that, then run Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions. You can
get the update here:

http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.aspx?pid=download&location=/mac/downl
oad/OFFICEX/OfficeX_1019.xml

If you still have problems post back with details... And *don't* reinstall
Office. It rarely fixes anything (other than a few specific conditions) and
can make matters worse.

This usually means you are missing a service release.

"Not enough memory..." is a generic error message that is usually
misleading. What Word is really trying to say is that "Something I expected
to be able to use was not in memory when I went to use it."

The "something" could be anything at all. When the error message was
written (back in the OS 8 days...) the usual cause of something not being in
memory was that there was not enough free memory left to put it into.

Now, it usually means that whatever Word was looking for doesn't exist on
the computer :)

Go to the Microsoft website and re-apply the service updates for Microsoft
Office, starting with 11.3.3 then 11.3.4. Hopefully that will add or
restore whatever is missing.

Hope this helps

Time for that second cup of coffee, John  The OP specified Office X
10.1.4
