Near the top of the cited article is a section entitled "The solution"
followed by six steps (five really, because the sixth step isn't really
a step). What part do you not understand?

Hi, thanks for your reply, i found another way to sort this issue out, which
is better for me,anyway thanks again, here is the solution i found for anyone
else who has the same problem.
work around this problem by running Setup. Follow these steps....
1- Launch the Vista Control Panel
2- Click on 'Programs'
3- Under 'Programs and Features' click on 'Uninstall a program'
4- Select Microsoft Office from the list of installed applications, and then
click on the 'Change' button
5- In Office 2003 Setup, choose 'Add or Remove Features' ( the UI will be
slightly different for other Office versions)
6- In Office 2003 Setup, click the 'Choose advanced customization of
applications' box, and then click on the 'Next' button
7- Locate 'Office Assistant' in the feature tree under 'Office Shared
Features'
8- Set all of the assistant characters to 'Not Available'
9- Set the character that you would like to use to 'Run from my computer'
Good luck.

I'm lost after the first step that is outlined on the link below ..... I
don't know the exact link(s) to click on and I don't want to mess up my new
computer. Is there another way to fix this problem that'll be easier for me
to understand??

Hi, I wanted to thank you for the info as I waas having the same problem
As I followed your instructions the only thing I found different on mine
was when I got to my command promppt it did have Administrator on
the blue banner but the prompt was not X:\ but a C:\
Anyway following the C:\ windows\system32\ I typed the copy dialogue and
tried to follow the rest but after I typed the first line I exited the command
prompt and checked the office assistant and it was there..... So it
definitely
worked. I will say after I typed the copy dialogue it was followed by 1 file
copied.

Anyway it works and I'm a happy camper for sure.
Thanks!!!

Thank you for your solution, Gtel. I tried the command prompt thing but it
did not work for me... this did the trick and I have my helpful kitty back.
Thank you very much.

So instead here is how I fixed it using David's instructions as a
guide.

Downloaded the Microsoft Agent core components from: 'Microsoft Agent
downloads for end-users'
(look for the link 'Download the Microsoft Agent core components (395
KB exe)')

Right clicked on Start button to Explore.

Manually copied Agentdpv.dll from c:\windows\msagent\ to
c:\windows\system32\

Opened Word.

Clicked Show the Office Assistant and voila it worked. I was able to
change the assistant and have not had any problems.

Hope this helps for people who don't want to mess about with the
registry or the command prompt.

This works
