Not enough memory to convert this document

Trying to open a word document I wrote 8 years ago. Word gives me the
following message: "there is not enough memory or disk space to convert this
document"
The document is only 40,490 bytes. Don't know what to do.

Thanks Anne Troy for your suggestion. I discovered that the problem arose
because the document even though it outwardly appeared as a Word document it
was in fact a Wordperfect document. It openned up a soon as I used
Wordperfect.
What bothers me is that the first step in the 3 step procedure I read in
your reference asked me to use the "Open and repair" choice in the "Open
dialog box". To be honest with you I was never able to get an "Open dialog
box" anywhere. Does it matter that I am using Windows XP professional?
