Not enough memory

When attempting to open a password protected excel 98 file I get the
message "Not enough memory". I have already tried allotting more
memory to the application in multiples and it has not helped. I just
recently applied the password to it (within the last 2 months) and
just now went to open it after I placed the password on it and got
that message. I am running OS9. How can I open the file now?

Setting a password does not increase the size of the file. When you
increased memory allocation:

-did you increase only "preferred" memory allocation? Changing the
"minimum" setting is unnecessary, and may preclude opening XL if the
full amount of RAM is not available. Changing only "preferred"
allocation allows the app to run if there's less than the full
amount requested, but at least the "minimum".

-do you have virtual memory enabled?

-what does "in multiples" mean? for XL98, "preferred" memory
allocation should need no more than 20MB unless the printer driver
requires more.

There are several other problems that may cause this, you can find
them at
