Not enough memory

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-320E, it has a Matshita DVD/CD RAM UJ850S. I have
exhausted everything I know and could look for to fix this to no avail. What
happened first was that my cd/dvd goes whir whir three times and stops.
Everything says that this device is working properly. I then deleted it from
the Device Manager and restarted. The driver reinstalled and it put it back
in the Device Manager. Still it does the same thing. Then I tried to open
word and excel and it says there is not enough memory to run. I have 55G of
hard drive space and don't know what else to do.
