not enough resources

I have some files that have grown to where Excel tells me there are errors in
saving or that it can't update the links because of not enough resources.
I'm running xp on a 2.0 dual core with 1GB of Ram and Excel 2003.

I've tried cutting links to all but the most critical stuff, shut down
outlook and everything else.

Any tricks?
