not finding MSO97.dll after XP upgrade

After updating to XP my Office Programs (excel,
powerpoint, etc.), responds "failure to start because
MSO97.DLL was not found." I followed method #1 in
knowledge base article 164921 with no success. I
actually found via "explore" that the "Office" folder has
this file listed. I copied a second MSO97.DLL to the
folder....no luck. MSO7enu.DLL is also in the proper
place. Any suggestions on how to restore these programs
on my home computer?

Probably the easiest thing is to unistall Office and then run DiskClean and
then close all programs, especially any AV ones and then reinstall Office

Is there supposed to be some type of "fix" program in XP
to address these kinds of problems?

When installing a new OS over an existing OS, I have always deinstalled
Office 97, then run the Office Cleaner application to remove all
vestiges of Office 97 from the registry. Office 97 has some problems
with configuring the registry properly if the previous install was in
any way corrupted, or if Office 97 is simply having a bad day. I would
try this route with your installation. The Office Cleaner can be found
somewhere on the Office 97 support site. Deinstall Office 97, run the
cleaner, then reinstall.
