Not possible to start excel

Hello,
I am just a starter here. But as the Microsoft website adviced, I did the
essential updates. Due to this my excel cannot start anymore. It's asking for
the XP Office Professional Disk. As I don't have this version I cannot insert
the disk. What can I do?
Updates fun...but they screw normal work processing.
