Not receiveing Bounce reports

D

Dan

Hi.
I was looking for some help and possible reasons and fix's for why I am not receiving reports from emails that bounce.
I have tested the accounts that I am sending emails from by sending to a working email address with a differnet domain and replied, so the accounts are fully working.
It just when I send an email to an account that will obviously throw a bounce reply to (this was done for testing, and one of the email address was, "mailto:[email protected]"), it doesn't!

Any ideas why we are not getting any reports come back saying that there has been a bounce?

Thanks in advance! :)

Depends on the receiving mail server AFAIK....

What version of Outlook are you using? What kind of mail server are you
using?

Mail to the address you provided will only generate a bounce message
from your server because that domain doesn't exist.

Mail to addresses with valid domains will only generate a bounce message
if the receiving server is configured to send one - not all are.

I am using Outlook 2003 on my PC and the server has Outlook 2002 running. The OS we are using is just XP Pro, we dont have a need for a big server.
We have our mail server set up with Freeola, and our ISP is BT if that helps.

Any ideas?

There are a number of conditions which must exist for a bounce to be
generated; none are under your control.

Your message submission server (configured in your email client as the
outgoing server) will generate a Non Delivery Report (NDR) if the
destination domain is invalid, or if the destination server refused delivery
for any reason.

The gateway (MX) mail server at the destination *may* generate an NDR if it
accepted email for delivery, then can't deliver it (a bad configuration;
many such servers don't do this because of spam issues).

For the second case, you are at the mercy of the destination mail admins.
For the first case, you need to communicate with the administrator of your
message submission server.
