Not receiving live email from exchange

Can somebody please advise.
I have XP laptops connecting Outlook to an Exchange 2000 (from SBS2000)
server. But I never get the emails from the server unless I do
send/receive. Surely they should appear automatically !
What am I doing wrong ?

Not sure if I understand exactly, but have you checked
Tools/Options/Mail Setup/"Send/Receive"/ and checked the
auto send-receive settings?

How are they configured? Is the mail account an Exchange connection or a
POP3 or IMAP? Also check and see whether Outlook isnn't in Offline mode;
File-> Work Off-line
