to the right place if this is not it.

I am playing an audio CD on the CD drive of my computer, and I had to visit
a website which has sound, and now I am getting both my CD and the website's
sound through my speakers simultaneously. How do I turn off the website's
sound and still play my CD?

I am using Windows XP Professional. The CD operates via Windows Media
Player 10. Our office LAN uses IE to access the internet.

Thank you in advance.

This is normal behavior by the Windows operating system and is NOT a Microsoft Office question.

However, I can answer your question.

You need to run the Volume Control accessory.

To start the Volume Control accessory, click on Start (a.k.a. the Start Menu) -> Programs (or All Programs) ->
Accessories -> Entertainment -> Volume Control

Click Options -> Properties

Under "Adjust volume for", choose "Playback"

Under "Show the following volume controls:", make sure that there is a check next to the following items (some
items may have a different name):
Volume Control
Wave
SW Synth
CD Player

Click "OK"

Now place a check next to "Mute" for each one you wish to mute (turn off).

If the sound playing from the website is a MIDI file, then you would need to mute SW Synth.

I would mute Wave and SW Synth, leaving Volume Control and .CD Player un-muted.

In the future, questions related to Windows and NOT Microsoft Office should be posted in the Windows (or in
your case, Windows XP) newsgroup.
