Not sure where to post this

Hi,

Not sure where to post this question as had some computer discs stolen after
reinstalling programs on nieces computer after it crashed after some kind of
update, restore didn't work so I reformatted it for her, anyway somebody
stole my discs from car but got them back managed to report the others to
companies and at least one has been copied and used and want to report that
my Office suite has almost certainly been copied and is being used and
licence is only for 3 computers but been on legal pc's for a year on one,
close to year on other two. Is there anywhere can report this as not sure if
when updates go on they can be tracked?

Any help much appreciated as wouldn't want my programs to suddenly stop
working because somebody has copied my legally owned discs.

If you can prove to your automobile insurance company that your
discs were stolen, then the loss might be covered by
comprehensive (fire/theft/vandalism) or contents coverage. If
you think posting this tall tale of woe is to get you a free new
set of Microsoft Office discs and product key, it's probably not
going to happen.

Hi Garfield-n-oldie,
My insurance company have already replaced the window they broke to steal
them from my glovebox so I'm not an idiot and left them in plain sight as I
said I'm law abiding which means I don't was as you hinted a free key I want
to report a possible fraud. Thankfully my car CD player is one that is no
good without the keycode and this can only be obtained by the legal owner or
Ford for a fee so they left that but sadly found my computer discs. I was
lucky enough to get the discs back when they found the thief with a lot of
other property on them so I don't need to claim for them as I was one of the
lucky few where the thief was caught, will probably get a smack on the wrist
and told not to steal from cars again, but my main concern as a law abiding
citizen is the illegal copying of these discs, one had already been copied
and used an internet security program, thankfully that company cover email
support for up to 2 years not 90 days like Office so when they found that one
was being used illegally they blocked it and denied it access to any updates
and if they copied this one there seems a high likelyhood they copied my
office disc as well and maybe I'm stupid but I want to report this as it
means it could well be being used on 4,5 goodness knows how many computers
and the licence as an MVP you knows means 3 legal computers this is why I
wondered if there was anybody on this community who could tell me where to
report this possible fraud but seems as an MVP you just think I want a new
key, I don't I'm not like that I pay for things I want to own and find it
offensive that you assumed this is all I was after when I want to report a
legal issue.

Microsoft does not keep track of who owns which product key. This ocmmunity
consists of people like you, not Microsoft employees. If we sometimes seem
skeptical about the true intents of the posters, sift thru some of the
posts. Many people have "lost" their CDs but have the product keys or have
the CDs and "lost" the product key. There are either a lot of people who
don't take care of several hundred dollars worth of software or they have
bootleg copies. I won't go into the fact that you were installing your
software on someone else's computer.

You've mentioned the disks but not the product keys. Those disks might as
well be Frisbees without a working product key.

You can try calling Microsoft and reporting it but I doubt there's anything
they can do about it.

BTW: You only get three installations with Office Student and Teacher/Home
and Student.

Hi JoAnn,

Not sure if other post actually posted as IE went odd, anyway I have discs
and product key as disc was still in big Office box.

Wasn't illegally putting office on, it's my niece's laptop and asked office
people when bought it if could put it on her laptop as 3rd licence as she
lived at home but comes to our house everyday for school and after school as
Mum works so first 2 legal licences are on my desktop and laptop and then her
laptop. Am too honest to do anything illegal this is why was concerned about
somebody using my discs illegally as got everything back, well will do soon
but they're safe and nobody else can use them as thief was caught so are now
all safe just praying won't need to install them on mine as can't physically
have them until court case don't think.

Anyway I'm sorry as don't have many problems so rarely visit these forums
and I thought MVP meant microsoft employee so sorry for my mistake. I would
never do anything illegal like put it in more than licence says and am
shocked that they don't keep records of who owns which product code and
doesn't seem much point in reporting it if they have no record of fact I
bought it legally and have only done legal things with it. Suppose it just
upsets me as car is new to me so break in and broken window then finding
discs stolen and few days later knowing one had already been used illegally,
as informed internet security company that disc had been stolen and they were
able to track mine and niece's updates somehow and blocked the illegal one.
When they told me they'd caught thief was please and that they had my discs,
as I keep sisters discs for safety at my house had my name(Debbie's disc) on
back of box, so police knew that the discs were mine as said same on all of
them.

Maybe I'm too honest but if I buy a product and it says 3 computers I email
or ring and ask if can buy another licence if need one like my internet
program as its on my sisters desktop but bought a separate licence for that
as only 3 user so maybe I'm just too honest for my own good but just really
upset me when car was broken into as thought they'd be safer there than in a
bag whilst went shopping as had them wrapped in a bag with handles but you
could see through bag so walking through shops with bag clearly showing I had
computer discs in it stupidly thought glove compartment would be safer, next
time have to do something will come home first and bring discs home then go
shopping just throught I'd save myself some time ha big mistake cost me more
well in upset over car as took me long time to save for it.

Anyway thanks for help won't bother trying to report it, bitter and angry
side in me just hopes their pc goes wrong so they lose it all again but then
they'll probably just go and steal another one :-(

Unfortunately doing the "right thing" is difficult and committing crimes can
be profitable. It sucks but what we can do is to continue to play by the
rules and follow the law. At least that way we can look in the mirror and
not be ashamed of what we see in there.

Hi JoAnn

You're right there and suppose that is the thing I can look in the mirror
and know I've been honest and am glad that my parents brought me up this way
and you're right crime be sadly profitable whereas being law abiding citizens
seems to bring nothing expect that nice feeling that we know we've been
honest.

Thanks for your understanding seems we've both been brought up the same way.
