not the usual "A document with name _____.xls" problem

I have a Word document that has links to an Excel spreadsheet. When I
open the Word document and tell it to update the links, I get the "A
document with the name _____.xls is already open" error message.

It only happens with this one Excel workbook, and only when I open the
Word document and ask it to update the links.

I don't get the message when I open the Excel workbook. I don't have
the workbook open when I attempt to open and update the Word document.

I've verified that the "Ignore other applications" check-box is not
checked. I have done the "excel.exe /regserver" step and have gotten no
love from Word or Excel.

I'm out of ideas, and haven't found anything in the Word or Excel
newsgroups. Anyone have suggestions?

b) use a real reporting program

excel and word are for babies.

a) I don't have data, I have financial reports. The School's financial
systems require Excel to work properly. Otherwise I have more work to
do than is necessary.
b) The real reporting program is coming. This was my own stop-gap
creation until SAP (known as HopkinsOne in our circles) comes on-line
in a couple months.

I have to work with the tools I am given by The Powers That Be,
regardless of whether I like it or not. You may not realize or
understand quite a number of people in positions of authority in
organizations the world over are neophytes when it comes to technology,
and so we tech geeks push the advances we can, when we can, and deal
with it when we can't.

And the way I deal with it is when I can't figure out the answer on my
own, I turn to the newsgroups hoping someone will share their
experience/wisdom, not their unhelpful insults.

But I know this is not out of character for you. Yeah, I've done my
homework, Mr. Aaron Kempf, and your arrogance here and in many other
message boards is only exceeded by your lack of compassion.

excel isn't a reporting engine; go and play in the freeway
seriously; you're stuck in the first grade of the technology ladder;
and a centralized SAP implementation isn't going to help you to crawl
out of that hole

the schools financial systems DO NOT REQUIRE EXCEL

just because a bunch of Mac-dorks work in your school district.. does
this really mean that you REQUIRE excel?
