note container merge issues

Ok, say I have two note containers, each of which contains a list, like
this:

Container 1

Alice
Betty
Carol

Container 2

Salad
Dessert
Drinks

If I merge them by dragging one near the other, they append and I end
up with something like this:

Alice
Betty
Carol
Salad
Dessert
Drinks

What I want is to merge the two note containers so that the lists are
side by side, like this:

Alice Salad
Betty Dessert
Carol Drinks

Is there some way to do easily?

Or is there some way to group note containers without merging them so
you can move all the containers at once and they stay together where
you've placed them?

This is all done with typing input, not handwriting or drawing.
Thanks for any thoughts you might have for me!

Meghan, I'm afraid there's no way to "group" columns like you describe, but
you can put one list beside another to achieve a similar effect. If you find
OneNote is too aggressive at merging, you can shrink the width of the note
container of the first list to give more room for the second list to be
positioned.
