"Note level 1" in notebook layout view isunbulleted - how to change?

I love using notebook view in Word, but one thing I cannot stand is that if I have a bunch of one-line notes (hitting "enter" after each note) it is impossible to tell between them because there is no indicator (such as a bullet or otherwise) that they are distinct from each other. At note level 2 and beyond there are bullets, but not note level 1.

I am aware that if I mouse over each entry, a clear "pearl" will appear next to each individual entry, but this is not enough - I need to see which notes are distinct from each other at a glance.

Is there a solution for this?

Yes, there is a solution for this, but please be aware that it's dangerous
:)

The Notebook View is comprised of special styles defined as an outline list.

You can use Format>Bullets and Numbering>Outline>Customise to put a bullet
on the first level, just as you can with any other outline list in Word.

Just be aware that Word Notebook View is particularly fragile. It hates
having those styles played with, and it may crash if you do. Make sure you
do not write the modifications back to the template, just in case.

Cheers
