notebook layout view

Hi -- when a student submits word documents to me they always come up in notebook layout view. I can switch to page layout or normal view, edit, save and close... but when I reopen the document it comes up in notebook layout view again. How do I reset either the document or this students view preferences so that it comes up in page layout or normal?

The student needs to CREATE the document as a "Document", not a "Notebook".

Notebook View is a bit of a misnomer: it's not "just" a view, it is a
different internal file structure.
