Notebook Layout View

Hello.

I have a question concerning the Notebook Layout View in Word 2008.

Is it *safe* to use this view on a longer term basis? I would like to set up such a document as a free-form database of sorts. It would hold random chunks of text, links and so forth. I won't be converting back and forth between views or anything like that.

Of course, the file will be backed up and I'll save a copy of everything in RTF format.

Am I wasting my time? Is this view reliable - beyond quick and temporary note taking?

Thanks.

I don't know of any reason to question the stability of a document file
saved in Notebook form. However, using *any* file - regardless of view -
that way subjects it far more likelihood of deterioration & corruption.

There are a number of features available in the program - some of which are
Office-wide - which are designed & intended to better serve what I
understand your need to be. I strongly suggest that you investigate
AutoText, AutoCorrect, the Scrapbook, Projects, etc. The Scrapbook in
particular *is* a "database" for just such a purpose & includes a number of
organization, filtering & sorting features. See the Help topic:

Thank you for the quick response.

I'll have to re-think my use of this feature. The Scrapbook never really caught my eye but it does seem to be a more practical solution. I need to spend more time exploring the entire Office package.

Ah, don't we all??? :) It's astounding the volume of resources available to
us the existence which we are often overlook.

No.

Use Excel if you want to make mini-databases :)

Notebook Layout documents have a depressing habit of blowing up when you
need them. Particularly if you edit them constantly.

Excel, on the other hand, tends to be rock solid and readily implements a
Sheets/Rows/Columns metaphor.

Simple "Lists of stuff" are easy, and if you know it well, truly
labyrinthine relational structures are also no problem.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the note.

I hadn't considered Excel but I'm sure that many folks use the program for their database chores.
