2 days ago I posted a problem about numbering in Notebook view: (a) defaulting to Bullets when I used the Promote/Demote buttons; (a) after I'd customised it still defaulted to Bullets, and when I returned to Numbering the number did not correspond to what it should have done after I'd customised levels and checked Restart Numbering for each Notebook level. John McGhie very helpfully suggested that numbering is not correctly defined in STYLES. When I promote or demote, I am altering the "Outline Level" of the paragraph. That should switch to a different formatting style. In my case, it's switching to the wrong one. He referred me to Shauna Kelly's explanation at: http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/index.html I followed all the advice in this very helpful website. To do so I had to switch to Outline View, since modifying styles is not an option in Notebook View (at least not in Word for Mac 2004 V11.2) Some outstanding problems about alignment (see my reply to John on the orginal posting). But main problems now are: 1. Although Promote/Demote and Move Up/Down now work in Outline View, they still do not work in Notebook view because. from what I can gather, the numbers are now Outline Numbered whereas the Promote and Move buttons in Notebook View relate to Note Level 1, 2, etc. Hence it hasn't solved the problem of how to default to Notebook Level Numbering and automatically adjust to the numbering appropriate to the level. The Microsoft stuff refers to Notebook outline levels. Are these incompatible with Outline outline levels? If so, why? And why can't they be consistent between different views? 2. Shauna advises that having spent so much time customising numbering, alignments etc (which I have!), make these available for future documents by checking the Add to Template box for each Style. But when I try and do this in Mac OSX 10.4.5 Word crashes every time. I'll greatly appreciate any advice John
