Notebook view pinwheel

Often, when I am in notebook view, i will perform an operation (saving,
changing from bullet to no bullet, or vice versa, inserting audio notes etc)
and the pinwheel will come up. It never goes away and i wind up forcing a
quit. Any ideas?
