Notebook View

Has anyone used this feature?
What do you think of it?
When using the recording audio notes feature, how do I "locate" where the
recording resides in the notebook? I don't see an icon anywhere.

Thanks!

I have, actually, and I think it's nice. Though I have to admit that I
haven't used it intensely, so don't rely too much on what I'm saying. There
are still some things that annoy me, such as the fact that there is by
default an automatic date field in the header, or the complete lack of
styles within the notebook view. Also, I've noticed that it doesn't really
like too much copying back and forth from other Word documents or websites,
as I've managed to crash the program on several occasions doing precisely
that. I've never really figured out what precisely caused the crash, but as
I said, I don't use it that often. By the way, we already had a discussion
about the audio note icons some time ago. The people at Microsoft think that
it would clutter the screen if all the audio note icons were visible at the
same time, so they decided to hide them, making them visible only if your
mouse cursor hovers above a paragraph which includes an audio note. Though I
think that having the text cursor in such a paragraph should also highlight
the icon. But remember, the notebook view is still a new feature, so it's
normal that there are a number of shortcomings. That being said, I would
have preferred if Microsoft had left that feature completely out of Word and
had instead created a proper note-taking software (OneNote for Mac,
anyone?), but I guess that will not happen, at least not anytime soon, since
there are no tablet Macs.

Thanks. Yes, I like Notebook better than OneNote because, for one, you can
import paste excel spreadsheets and graphics into Word2004, whereas that is
not possible, at least with the current beta version of OneNote.

On the other hand, I hear there are some really cool things in store for the
next version of Word for PC....

Hi Michael

To answer your question, you can locate the audio by hovering over the text
you were typing. Audio Notes timestamps audio to what line you were typing
at the time. You can start the audio from any point in the recorded stream
by hovering over the line you typed at that time. When you hover an icon
appears in the margin - click on that and off you go!

Thanks - I guess the only problem with that is if you have several pages of
notes (which most students do), you will have to spend more time hovering
than flying! To me, that's what notebook margins are for: Scribbling in
notes, or dates, or other important reminders such as "audio recording"...

I use this feature in every class. It has been extremely helpful during
studying to hear some passages in the professor's own words. The one
thing I would love for them to add is a keyboard sound filter to take
out the keyboard sounds. The keyboard typing sounds is always
consistent, so I would think this would be possible (there are many
programs that will sample a selected sound and remove it from a
recording).

Hello,

Thanks for the great suggestion. I've passed it on to the AudioNotes team.

I think it's an awesome feature, but the lack of compatibility with PCs
is a serious problem for me.

There should be a toolbar that will let you playback the recordings, as
it plays back, an icon will move to the different parts of the notebook.
