Notepad loads instead of Sharepoint Designer

Hi,
I'm new to sharepoint and have been working my way through various tutorials
and have come across a fairly basic problem of how to associate Sharepoint
Designer to Sharepoint Server.

I've no problem connecting SPD to my web sites but when I select the "Edit
in Sharepoint Office Designer" from a MasterPage Gallery, after displaying a
warning message about some files being harmful etc, it loads up in Notepad
instead of Sharepoint Designer.

Can anyone point to where I can fix this?

A second question that I have relates to this blog. Is it just me or doesn't
key word search work? I've tried searching for topics with keywords which I
can see in subject lines but it always comes back with nothing found, please
try harder
e.g.
Your query for "designer" did not return results.

The following may help you find the results you were looking for:

Check your spelling.
Enter a term or phrase that's less specific.
Try different phrasing.
Try fewer words
