Notes / Comments

If a user on a PC makes comments or notes about a slide can a MAc user
see those notes? By comment / notes I mean not the slide option but
the actually track changes type of thing...

PowerPoint doesn't have an option for Track Changes on the PC. There is an
option to go to the Insert menu and choose Comment. This option is
available on both the Mac version and the PC version so comments should be
able to go back and forth.

My question is if this is supposed to be possible, then how? I have a
powerpoint presentation that has had comments made to it from a PC and
they can not be viewed by a Mac, however I made a comment from a Mac
and could view it on a PC.

Hi,

In a stroke of stupidity the Windows PowerPoint team decided to make a
totally new totally incompatible method of comment boxes for PC versions of
Office 2003.

MacBU decided not to adopt the stupid new comment boxes and they won't work
in office 2004.

The old style comment boxes are still available in PowerPoint 2003. Users
who have PowerPoint 2003 should discontinue using the stupid new ones and
continue to use the ones that work.

Would that it were so. Or if it really is, 'splain how?

One of our addins will allow inserting old-style comments and will convert
existing new style ones to old ones, but I don't know of any PPT-native way of
adding old-style/Mac Compatible ones.

Hi Steve,

You're probably correct. I was thinking of a similar problem with
organization charts. You can install the old version of organization chart.

I guess if you make comments in Windows Office 2002 and later you can take
the point of view that for security purposes the comments will not be
readable by other versions of Office.

Following up...

Windows Office 2007 understands the old style comment boxes. I made a
document in PowerPoint 2004 and inserted a comment. PowerPoint 2007 treated
the comment box correct as a comment box (not just a text box). I edited the
comment and re-saved the presentation. Upon opening it in PowerPoint 2004
the comment box had been properly updated.

So the solution is to send a PowerPoint 2004 document with a comment box in
it to whomever is using one of the crippled Windows 2002 and later versions
of office. They can copy the comment box from your document and use it in
all their other documents so the comments will then work correctly.

That's certainly looking at the sunny side. <g>

I have to admit that I lean more toward your "dumb decision" explanation of this
one, sir.

Windows Office 2007 understands the old style comment boxes.

Yep. So do all earlier versions. That is, comments created on Mac PPT or WinPPT
2000 and earlier will be readable/editable in any version of PPT.

Comments created in WinPPT 2002 and later will not be visible in earlier versions
or on Mac PPT.

Or, better from my POV of course, and simpler for the user, tell them to buy my
StarterSet Plus addin. http://www.pptools.com/starterset/
