Nothing happens when clicking Symbols under Insert in Word 2002

I have been getting a Symbols box when clicking Symbols under Insert, but it
disappeared. The Symbols files under Fonts do exist, and are probably OK.
How do I get the Symbols capabilty back?

The Symbols item box is present under Insert, and so are the font files for
the symbols. But clicking on the 'Symbols' item produces nothing whatsover.
Dragging 'Symbols' from the Customize box into the Insert dialog box has no
effect, since the 'Symbols' item was there all along. It is just that
clicking on Symbols produces nothing whatsoever.

If you can click on Insert | Symbol, and see the symbols, but
cannot select one, it's usually because the x-mouse feature in
TweakUI is enabled.

No, the problem is that the word 'Symbols' appears under 'Insert' (in fact after trying around, it is there THREE TIMES!), but nothing appears!

Could be a registry problem. Try deleting the Toolbars value in
the Word data key as described in
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/MissingMenusEtc.htm .

My problem is, that I have the menu (Insert), I also have the item Symbols (in fact, it's there in triplicate by now), and the two files dealing with Symbols do exist under Fonts. But when I click on Symbols (number one, two or three), I get NOTHING. Yes, I do suspect a Registry error. To make it even more frustrating, I just cleaned out my (very dirty) Registry with a very good program (name of it will be furnished upon request), but the problem persists. I do hope that the Community will be able to point me to a solution; and if it involves getting into the guts of the Registry, I say -- the less the better, considering the risks involved when making a misstep there.

Use Tools | Customize to remove the three nonworking entries and add a new
one from the commands list. If this one does not work, look in Tools | Macro
| Macros for an InsertSymbol macro that might be highjacking the
InsertSymbol command.
