Nothing in Office will open

Hello,

We have 2 MacBook Pros in our household with mine purchased this summer (mine is 10.5.8). I successfully installed (and used in the past) Office for Mac 2008 on my laptop. The software was purchased and is installed/used on the 1st MacBook. (We were told at Apple that we can share the software.)
Anyway, suddenly neither of us can open anything in Office on our individual laptops. I cannot open documents or any Office application. When I try from my Office folder on the bottom right of screen (right of the dock and dash line) it just closes and does not even open a window. When I try to open from my applications folder, it bounces twice in my dock then disappears. At one point while I was trying different things a window opened stating I need to use Office Setup Assistant. I opened that and filled out the first screen but every time I click continue nothing happens. I have tried to open office on the other laptop (original laptop with this software loaded) and the same thing happens. Although I have not tried everything that I have on my laptop.

I do not know what to do. Should I uninstall and re-install? I will not lose any of my docs correct?
Also, not sure if this is related but we cannot use anything in Office at the same time. ??????

Thanks for any help

Jim

If you purchased the standard edition of Office, you can install on two
computers but you can't use at the same time if they are networked.

The main differences between Home & Student and standard edition are:

Home & Student
1) does not support exchange accounts
2) does not contain Automator actions
3) cannot be used for business purposes

Standard version has 1 CD key
Home & Student has 3 CD keys

Each Product Key represents a separate license to use Office 2008.

Each license entitles you to install on 1 "desktop" + 1 "portable" Mac. The
restriction is that you are not permitted to use any of the Office programs
on more than 1 of the 2 systems at the same time. If both Macs are on the
same network you will be physically prevented from launching an Office
program on the second Mac if any Office program is running on the other.

In total, the 3 licenses (Product Keys) for Home & Student enables you to
install on 6 separate Macs... Theoretically that means 2 Macs for each of 3
users or individuals.

Hope this helps!

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I understand why we cannot use Office at the same time.
Unfortunately this does not resolve my issue of not being able to use Office. At this time it is not open on either laptop so it is not an issue of using at the same time.

Thanks

Jim

Your complaint seemed to be using Office with two users. It was not clear
that no one could open Office.

Did it ever work? If it stopped, what happened?

Testing in a new User will quickly tell you if the problem is system wide or
if it¹s your User¹s folder that contains the problem.

What you give no indication of is your current update level of Office 2008,
and you did not say what the OS X version is for the other MBP. If Office is
not fully updated on each Mac (12.2.1) it may well be the cause of the
problem. Confirming your update levels & repairing disk permissions would be
the first step before chasing symptoms.
