Notification messages when using Tasks

We are trying to implement workflow using tasks in
Outlook and assigning work from these tasks, however, an
inordinate amount of notification emails are generated.
To keep the "master" task box uptodate, we have to open
each message or the update won't be applied to the
master. Is there any way of turning this requirement off
or perhaps writing a rule that will do it all for us?
