Notification Sounds only work with internal speaker output

I happened to have my headphones on (with ³internal speakers/headphones²
chosen in sound ³Output² preference ) & I heard the sounds!!, which I
thought were ³Broken² (see my earlier post ³Notification Sounds Still BROKEN
in Leopard²). So...I am now trying to figure out how to make the sounds work
when I have ³Line out² chosen using external speakers. None of the
notification sounds can be heard in this mode. I can only hear them when
internal speakers is chosen, which is not my preferred choice, as I am
editing audio & video on this machine. I need to have an audio cue whenever
Entourage receives a message, so I can stay on top of my incoming messages
from clients in a timely manner.
Anyone have a suggestion?
Thanks for all the replies to my previous post...

Open System Preferences under the Apple in the Menu bar.

Select Sound (second line under Hardware)

Click on the Input tab --> select Internal microphone

Set the volume for Input and Output. ( it could be Output is set too low or
is on mute)

Next, check the Output tab and make your selections there.

BTW, were you getting any system sounds?

I use Jolly's Play Sound with a rule to get customized sounds for certain
categories of mail. To me this is much more useful than the default sounds
that do not distinguish between important mail and spam.

See this page for using custom sounds with Entourage. You can even create
your own sounds or use computer voices to announce your mail. For example,
you could have the AppleScript say ³Mail from Dad².

Let me know if you continue to have problems.

Thanks again for you help, PROBLEM RESOLVED. I clicked "sound effects" tab
of my sound control panel.
"Play alerts & sound effects through:" I had
it set to "internal speakers" I now have it set to "line out"
My sounds are back.
Thanks Diane!

Great! I can't work without the little feedback sounds. I don¹t use a lot of
the default email sounds, but without sound feedback I¹m lost.
