Notification Sounds

I recently purchased and installed Office mac 2008 Home & Student Edition. MUCH OF THE TIME when I open Entourage there are NO notification sounds even though all the Notification Sounds are checked. When I click on the speaker icons, no sound choices are available. The drop-down menu only shows default.
What do I need to do to get notification sounds consistently?

After installing did you use Mirosoft's Autoupdater to update it to the
latest version? This was a problem with the earlier versions of
Entourage 2008 but it was fixed later. You can use the Help --> Check
for Updates tool.
