How can I get Entourage to notify me that there is a new message without
having the program running or hidden in the background. Is there any why to
make this happen. Is there some kind of "backgrounder" setting/pfre that
will monitor the mail server and then just play the sound or animate the
icon in the dock?

Thank you,

Entourage will need to be running, but if you close the window and switch to
another application, mail notification messages will show up whenever you
receive a new message. Have a look at the Notification section of
Entourage's preferences.

If that is not what you're after, post back!

You can't - SOME application has to be running in order to check your
email server.

However, there are lighter applications that might work for you (but
they'll have to be running, too), depending on what type of mail
accounts you have, e.g., MailCall, MailWIdget, Google Notifier, MacBiff,
etc. Check VersionTracker.com for links (and other apps).

As both Michel and JE explained, Entourage must be open. You can have it in
the background and receive notifications using Growl or Custom Sounds.

Use Growl with Entourage

See this page for using custom sounds with Entourage. You can even create
your own sounds or use computer voices to announce your mail. For example,
you could have the AppleScript say ³Mail from Dad².
