Now I can't delete by highlighting and hitting "Backspace" - why?

After using the feature of deleting phrases or whole sections by
highlighting them and then pressing "backspace", suddenly it doesn't work
anymore. I have to either use Delete or Backspace for every single letter.
What's going on? Did I accidentally change some preference or setting? How
do I get that deleting funcion back again?
