Num Lock Key in Excel

When editing cells in an Excel worksheet, the number
keypad does not respond as expected. The keys appear to be
redefined to move the cursor rather than type the numbers.
I have tried to press the Num Lock key, with no result.

How can I get the number pad to work as desired?
