Number Applying Value To Text Selection In List Box

I have created a list box where the choice is either I or M. I need the
selection to convert to 0 or 1 accordingly. I then use SUM to add up the
total in a column.

Why not use COUNTIF rather than SUM

=COUNTIF(A1:A10,"I")

as an example
