number column header

One day I launched my excel 2000 and was surprised to see
all column headers became numbers, 1, 2, 3, etc. instead
of normal alpha (A, B, C, etc)and they stay numeric even
opening previous excel files. Does anyone know how to put
headers back to alpha?
Thanks.
