number format word 2000

I have a table and am trying to put the dollar sign aligned on the left hand
side of the cell and the figures on the right so that no matter how many
digits in the number the dollar signs with be in line. Using word 2000 on
Word 2000 Professional.

I used to do this in WordPerfect under "Accounting" number format.

There's no built-in way to do this in Word. You can fudge it by inserting
zeroes for the "missing" digits in shorter numbers (adding commas as
required) and applying the white font color to them.

Another "fudge": could you simply put an additional column immediately to
the left of the one containing your numbers, exactly one character wide and
containing only the $ sign, and eliminating the border between that column
and your numbers to the left, so it looks as if they are all in one cell?

Teh dollar sign will not copy with the dolalr amounts in the adjoining
column, but it will display the way you want, I think.

Thanks - this is what I have now. In the same row I have varying information
- some just text and in the same row maximums with a dollar amount. If I add
information in an existing row, I have to make sure I move all the dollar
marks down. I thought if I have the sign and amount in the same cell it
would be easier.

If you can fix the column width, you could define a style with left alignment
and a right-aligned tab at the right of the column. Type the dollar sign,
then a tab, then your numbers. That should align the way you describe.

Failing that, you can always just apply the tab manually to the cells or
columns in question.
