Number formats inconsistent

We run Office 2003 on a Citrix terminal server. Having just migrated from
one server to another (version 9.230.50211) we now encounter this problem:



Most of our spreadsheets were configured to display negative numbers in
brackets, via Format/Cells/Number tab/Number, then third selection down. If
you open the file outside of Citrix and select a cell that has been thus
formatted, and click on Format/Cell then the display highlights that
selection. If you then click on custom format it displays

#,##0.00_);[Red](#,##0.00)



If you close (without saving) and re-open the same file within Citrix,
select the same cell as above, and view the format settings, it goes
straight to Custom selection (not "Number") selection and displays

#,##0.00;[Red]-#,##0.00


We tried changing the international settings on the server (stored outside
Excel, part of the Windows OS settings) so that negative numbers be
displayed in brackets by default, but it did not seem to help.



Anyone got any other ideas? Is this a regular problem?

PS sorry for the extra line breaks. I originally typed the message in Word,
then copied and pasted into Outlook. It looked OK when posting.

I don't use Citrix, but maybe...

Excel picks this up from a windows setting:

Windows start button|control panel
regional and language options
regional options tab
click the customize button
currency tab
change the negative currency format to show ()'s.

Sorry, Dave, when I said in OP that I was trying to solve it by changing the
International Settings on the server, your proposed solution is precisely
what I was trying: The regional and language options. My fault for using
sloppy terminology

I sadly do have Citrix but because I'm a laptop user have to option to access
Excel either from my machine or via a Citrix portal but would never use the
latter unless essential because of the problem you mention and others you
will encounter.

One major headache is the a perfectly valid path to a file will cease to be
valid if accessed by a Citrix user. Sorry I can't help specifically with your
problem.

In Windows Regional Settings you must make the negative number setup under the
"Currency" tab.

Yes........currency, not Number tab.
