Number formatting not stable, Word 2002 XP. OS XP

Working on a instruction manual and I am trying to make
numbered (1.,2.,3., etc.) lists that are followed by
lettered (a., b., c., etc.) lists that are inserted into
regular paragraphs of text. I need to renumber each
section of the instructions BUT Word cannot/will not
renumber or if it does it renumbers ALL of the numbers in
the document. I sometimes can get a correct number
sequence for a section by using CTRL-Z once, often have
to use CTRL-Z several times.

I have searched through Word help. I have removed Word
and reinstalled it. I have downloaded and installed all
available updates and patches through Microsoft (after
the reinstall.) I have looked online for expert advice. I
have tried an engineer's Word 2002 XP on XP and had the
same problem. How can we overcome this glich?

Also how can I stop Word from making every formatting
change I make into a new style. Often I just need to
change one sentence in the whole document and don't need
a new style for just a sentence.

For any Word developers out there. Make a function that
will remove unused styles from the list especially when
importing files from other people or from old files. I
like to have a tight palette of styles and don't want to
manually delete old/bad/out-of-date styles each and every
time. Perhaps a gallery function where you can manage
your styles SEPARATE from any file/doc. That would be a
dream for we who have deadlines.

Glad I could help. I agree that this and all of Shauna's articles are very
helpful. Also, if you have not yet discovered it, you will find loads more
helpful articles at the Word MVPs' FAQ site, www.mvps.org/word.
